Mobile Mapping for smarter City Planning
Over the past decade, Drammen has been a pioneer in smart city development in Norway, transforming its waterfront and city center into an attractive and sustainable urban environment. Field is proud to support this development by helping the municipality digitalize its street network through comprehensive 360° mapping and data capture.
Project context
With help from Field, Drammen Municipality now has a complete, high-resolution visual record of its city road network. Using advanced 360-degree imaging and laser scanning technology, Field has mapped approximately 560 kilometers of roads, creating a powerful digital foundation for smarter city management and more efficient case handling.
All data is delivered through Field’s web-based platform, Mapspace, where municipal staff can access, analyze, and measure the city directly from their browser.
Customer Quote:
“Field has successfully delivered an extensive 360° street mapping project for Drammen Municipality. The project has been an important step in our efforts to digitalize processes within city planning.
The mapping includes all municipal roads, as well as drivable pedestrian and bicycle paths. The images are available for internal use and case management through Field’s web-based solution, Mapspace.
These highly detailed 360° images allow us to inspect environments in a digital twin with great precision. This significantly reduces the need for on-site inspections and helps us speed up case handling related to property, infrastructure management, and other municipal tasks.”

Visualizing & planning City Development Over Time - all in one platform
Drammen has a long horisont for mapping and managing their city data. They conducted its first detailed street mapping project in 2017, followed by new mapping rounds in 2020 and 2024.
Field has made all historical imagery available within the same Mapspace solution, allowing users to view the same locations across multiple years. This provides valuable insights into how the city has developed over time.
“Access to historical street data gives users a unique perspective when planning new projects. With precise visual documentation from different years, municipalities can evaluate changes and make better-informed decisions,” explains Dag Solberg, Sales Director at Field.
Multiple datasets and views
The project brings multiple spatial datasets together in a single digital workspace. In addition to the newly captured imagery, historical 360° datasets are also available in Mapspace, enabling the municipality to review how locations have changed over time.
Drammen also uses oblique aerial imagery in the platform, allowing users to seamlessly switch between aerial perspectives and street-level views of the same location.
By combining street imagery, aerial imagery, historical datasets, and measurement tools in one solution, the municipality gains a comprehensive overview of the city—supporting more efficient planning, maintenance, and case management.
The datasets and visualisation tools are available in both Mapspace, and via other systems with URL.
